Chapter Eleven

Zane breathed deeply, his face buried in the soft, honeyed curve of River’s neck and shoulder. His cock was still lodged inside her, happily pulsing with aftershocks, and if he didn’t know better, he would’ve sworn he’d died and gone to heaven.

“I don’t normally cuddle,” she admitted, but snuggled closer, hooking a leg around his calf.

“It’s non-negotiable, so get used to it.” He pressed a lingering kiss to her temple. Christ, she smelled amazing. The scent of sex and sweat mingled with her honeyed fragrance and he loved it. She should’ve turned it in since the military had provided it. Or, hell, she could’ve sold it. The reason she’d worn it hadn’t been real, but the stone in it certainly was. She could’ve gotten a pretty penny.

River turned so she could look up at him. Those moss green eyes were darker than usual, but glowing brighter than he’d ever seen before. “Because it reminded me of you…of us.” Her voice caught. “I shouldn’t have walked away after Yemen,” she said softly.

His heart sped up. “Why did you?”

A frown creased her brow. “Because I was a coward.”

Zane scoffed. “You’re one of the bravest people I know.” He studied her intently, waiting to see if she was going to try another reason, a different excuse. When she didn’t, he gave her his truth.
